CVCC Volleyball Continues Straight Set Wins Aasia McNeill led the Red Hawks with 11 kills. photo courtesy of Catawba Valley Community College Athletics CVCC Volleyball Continues Straight Set Wins March 13, 2021 Set scores were 25-14, 25-8 and 25-5 Sophomore outside Aasia McNeill led the charge for CVCC (11-0) with 11 kills, while freshmen middle hitters Delaney Conner and Kennya Sykes added eight kills apiece. Catawba Valley sophomore setter Amber Barker recorded a team-best 33 assists her third 30-assist match this season. McNeill also led the Red Hawks with a team-high 11 digs on defense and a team-leading two aces. The 46 total kills and .407 hitting percentage by CVCC in Friday’s match are the second most in both categories during a match this season.

Arts council director works to give money away; Greathouse to retire at end of year

Come the end of 2021, a peaceful transition of power is going to take place in Hickory’s West Wing. United Arts Council of Catawba County Executive Director Kathy Greathouse is retiring Dec. 31. She’ll quietly vacate her office in what is known as the West Wing, a building on the SALT Block in Hickory, and hand off her duties to the next director. Before I talk about Kathy, here’s a bit of arts council history from the organization’s website at artscatawba.org: “The United Arts Council of Catawba County was formed as the Hickory Arts Council in 1960. We were re-incorporated in 1979 as the Catawba County Council for the Arts, and we adopted our current name in 2006 to reflect our partnerships with our vibrant cultural organizations and our supportive local government.”

No. 2 Catawba Valley 3, Fayetteville Tech 2 Playing in their fifth match in six days, the Red Hawks fended off a challenge from the Trojans in a thrilling five-set win. Set scores were 23-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-15 and 15-10. Sophomore outside hitter Aasia McNeill and sophomore setter Amber Barker tallied career-best performances during the match. McNeill recorded a career-high 21 kills, while Barker made a career-high 41 assists.

Middle hitter Delaney Conner led CVCC (9-0, 7-0 in Region 10) with a team-high 11 kills, while outside hitter Carter Gibson and setter Amber Barker added seven kills each. Barker’s team-high 24 assists helped to facilitate a Catawba Valley attack that accounted for 37 total kills. Defensively, libero Caitlin Dailey recorded the most digs for CVCC with 13, and middle hitter Kennya Sykes recorded five blocks  part of a 14-block performance by the Red Hawks.
