My husband and I have opposite political views How do we stop arguing?

Our reader and her husband are struggling to be civil, she turns to the Midults for advice 12 March 2021 • 12:00pm Even discussing where to go on holiday results in all-out war about Brexit and immigration Credit:  Alberto Miranda Dear A&E, My husband and I met at a political event as students, so politics has always been part of our relationship. But while I’ve remained centre-right (aka reasonable), he’s gone harder to the right, to the point where it’s impossible to talk to him about anything. Discussing where to go on holiday results in all-out war about Brexit and immigration. We’ve barely spoken for months. I miss him, but I’m also angered by him. Where do we go from here? Vexed

Should I reunite and settle with my sweet ex boyfriend?

The pandemic year has been particularly tough on singletons Credit: Alberto Miranda Dear A&E, My ex-boyfriend recently said that he’d like to reunite, after 11 years apart. We had a quiet, lacklustre relationship, which lasted almost a decade. I was in my late 20s when I ended it as I felt it wasn’t enough, but we remained friends. He hasn’t really dated since, whereas I had some fiery, short-lived relationships. Now I’m 39 and I want to settle down and have a baby. I’d always held out for someone special, but I’m wondering whether to reciprocate as he ticks all boxes – reliable, secure and thoughtful. I just don’t feel that ‘zingy’ thing. Does that matter? And would it make me a bad person if I did it without telling him this? Cynical

I was gaslighted by my ex Should I confront him?

I was gaslighted by my ex. Should I confront him?  Our reader has been thinking about her abusive ex - and is considering whether to confront him for closure. She asks The Midults for advice 26 February 2021 • 12:00pm I can see now that I was being manipulated by my ex, but I don’t know whether to confront him Credit:  Alberto Miranda Dear A&E, I’ve been in a happy relationship for three years, but recently I’ve started thinking about my ex. I’ve realised I was a victim of gaslighting without knowing it. He once left me on the hard shoulder while we were driving home from a restaurant because he said I’d been ‘too friendly’ towards a waiter, and he kicked me out of bed one night after I told him I loved him but ‘didn’t sound convincing’. Afterwards he always said I drove him to it, so I’d apologise. I can see now that I was being manipulated, but I don’t know whether to speak to him about it? It would help me get closure, but equally I don t want t

Help! My husband and I can t stop bickering during lockdown

One reader is longing for a little more alone time. Credit: ALBERTO MIRANDA Dear A&E, My husband of 35 years is driving me mad. We were OK-ish during the first lockdowns, but now cabin fever has hit. I’m so cooped up and have run out of things to say to him. We also keep arguing as he insists on strolling to the shop daily for wine or chocolate, whereas I’m trying to limit our shopping to once a week to minimise risk. I find this selfish, he thinks I’m overbearing. We can’t agree what to eat, what to watch and have retreated to separate rooms; when we do come together, everything is an exhausting battle. Help.
