KCDSB Ready To Continue Online Learning

The Kenora Catholic District School Board was ready for anything. That’s coming from the board’s Director of Education Paul White following the announcement by Premier Doug Ford that schools would remain in virtual mode to close out the year. “Whether it be a quick pivot to in-person learning or remaining in remote learning we know this announcement is disappointing and hard for many students and families,” says White. “It’s becoming harder for students to stay engaged and continue to attend remote learning every day, but it’s important that we support one another.  Attend school every day until the last day on June 25th.  Every day of learning is important to reduce learning gaps.”

Mental Health Concerns Persist Across Region

Screenshot. KCDSB Board Meeting Statistics from the Kenora Catholic District School Board, which oversees operation of St. John School in Red Lake, confirms mental issues are going up during COVID-19. Mental Health Lead Sue Devlin says at both the elementary and secondary level they saw similar increases. “Our mental health referrals more than doubled, in some cases tripled this school year,” says Devlin. “By far our number one referral reason was dealing with stress and worries and we found that kids who struggled pre-pandemic were experiencing more significant symptoms.” Devlin adds there was also an unexpected symptom of stress caused by COVID-19.
