The blades were still spinning.
To keep from going face first into the blades, he put out his hand. I truly don t think I should be here right now, he said. I don t know how I made it out of that with only nearly losing my hand.
Brittain is scheduled to participate today in a Northeastern Ohio Regional Trauma Network Trauma Conference called Healing Hands at Cleveland Clinic Akron General in Akron. The conference, for health care providers, is well-timed because it s the season for lawn mower-related injuries.
The speakers will include the Jackson Township paramedics who arrived first at the scene of Brittain s accident, surgeon Dr. William Lanzinger who replaced his amputated hand and occupational therapist Irene Carr who will explain all it took to get it to function again, and trauma coordinator Carmen Rastorfer.
Nick Williams defends title at Repository Regional Spelling Bee timesreporter.com - get the latest breaking news, showbiz & celebrity photos, sport news & rumours, viral videos and top stories from timesreporter.com Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday newspapers.
That s what champions do.
Williams knows about winning probably better than most. The Tuscarawas Central Catholic Junior High eighth-grader had conquered the Canton Repository Regional Final Spelling Bee last year. And he was back Saturday afternoon to defend his title against 11 of the best spellers in the district, and from schools in Carroll, Holmes, Stark and Tuscarawas counties.
Inside the conference center complex at Kent State University s Stark campus, Williams was among a trio who had advanced almost by default to the 25th round of the event.
That s when Canton Country Day s Mason Humphrey misspelled puerilely. East Canton Middle School s Carter Menegay then got tripped up on kwashiorkor. Williams was up next. Dressed in a shirt with horizontal blue, red and yellow stripes, and tan pants, he marched his gray loafers yet again to a microphone between the pronouncer and judge.

JACKSON TWP. The Ohio Auditor s East Regional Office has relocated to the Conference Center on the Kent State University Stark campus.
The state agency had been using offices in the former Chase Bank tower at 101 Central Plaza S. in downtown Canton.
Ohio Auditor Keith Faber said the move means the agency will be paying lower rent. The $42,856 annual rent is more than $8,000 in savings, a spokeswoman for Faber said in an email.
“This is an exciting move for our office for many reasons, especially the cost savings and opportunities for recruitment with Kent State students and community members,” Faber said in a press release. “I hope we can see more of these types of partnerships among state institutions to save taxpayer dollars and increase public engagement with state operations.”
