As spring turns to summer and the light at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic-imposed tunnel shines brighter, three prominent UC Berkeley administrators met virtually to reflect on the past year and discuss what the future holds.
Moderated by spokesperson Dan Mogulof, Monday’s event saw Chancellor Carol Christ, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Paul Alivisatos and Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education Catherine Koshland come together for the 2021 Year End Campus Conversation. The three shared what the past year had taught them and also discussed what students, faculty and staff should expect in fall 2021.
Though Christ recognized the challenge of rebuilding the campus community, given that half of the undergraduate students have never been on campus, she feels both excitement and anticipation for the fall 2021 semester.
UC Berkeley professor in mechanical engineering Oliver O’Reilly will serve as campus’s interim vice provost for undergraduate education beginning July 1.
O’Reilly, who is also currently the associate dean for graduate studies in the division of computing, data science and society, will take over the role from Catherine Koshland, who will serve as the interim executive vice chancellor and provost, according to a campuswide email sent Thursday.
“Throughout his career, Oliver has demonstrated his deep commitment to the instructional and research mission of the campus as well as to furthering diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging,” the email reads.

Catherine Koshland, a member of the UC Berkeley community since 1984, has agreed to serve as the interim executive vice chancellor and provost, or EVCP, while campus launches a nationwide search for a permanent replacement for Paul Alivisatos per campus policy.
Koshland serves as the Wood-Calvert professor in the campus College of Engineering, a professor of environmental health sciences and a member of the Energy and Resources Group faculty, according to a campuswide email from Chancellor Carol Christ. She also served as vice provost for academic planning and facilities and serves as vice chancellor for undergraduate education.
