Uganda’s huge hydropower potential is one of the major reasons as to why the country enjoys the lowest electricity tariff in East Africa, according to the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA).
“The biggest advantage we have is that we have a lot of hydro. Hydro gives you the leverage to generate power cheaply,” the authority said in a statement.
The Nalubaale and Kiira hydropower complex at Jinja, the Bujagali hydropower plant, and the Isimba hydropower plant, account for nearly two-thirds of the country’s energy output, and charge far lower tariffs than those from thermal and solar power plants.

Court deals blow to KRA’s Sh21bn tax plan

NAIROBI, KENYA: Manufacturers have welcomed the High Court’s ruling which on Monday temporarily suspended the implementation of minimum tax by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
The Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) noted that the ruling captures the mood and the spirit of the country as businesses and individuals grapple with the difficulties presented with navigating the Covid-19 pandemic.
While reacting to the ruling, the taxman said it will abide by the court’s decision calling on those who had already paid the tax to retain it as a credit in the iTax ledger pending the outcome of the petition.
