Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) National Treasurer John Matiang’i has resigned after 13 years.
Matiang’i, a brother to Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i, said his resignation from the union was voluntary.
“It has been my delight to serve teachers and champion their causes. Working as a trade unionist is not the easiest of jobs, but I have walked in solidarity with teachers and my colleagues in the union in the truest sense of that phrase. I had their back as they had mine,” said Matiang’i.

The Teachers Service Commission CEO Nancy Macharia was put to the task by MPs over delays in the teachers pay deal negotiations as well as lack of recruitment of commissioners.
Reports indicate that only two commissioners have been in office since March 2020 as seven have retired. The commission is legally required to have nine members to make binding decisions on various issues. Can the CEO explain why she did not notify the President when she realised that the commission lacks a quorum to decide on teachers issues?
