On January 5, Kuco gave CoG 48 hours to consent to the return-to-work formula signed by the union and the Ministry of Health on January 1.
The union also wrote to the CoG on January 6 requesting for an urgent meeting with Oparanya with a view to resolve the impasse, but they are yet to get a response.
“This is a clear demonstration on the lack of goodwill and commitment from the devolved governments through their council to resolve this stalemate so as to restore normalcy and sanity in the health service provision more so during the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Gibore.
Among the issues the governors are contesting include the doctors’ risk allowance, which Kuco said require a minimum increment of between 500 per cent and 650 per cent for low cadres.

Over 400 nurses and medics have been locked out of their workplaces in Kisumu County after the government moved to institute disciplinary measures against staff who have been on strike.
According to an inside source at the county government, Health Chief Officer Gregory Ganda stated that the nurses had deserted their work by participating in the strike.
The county government halted the payment of the 428 medics’ salaries and issued them with show-cause letters which they will need to respond to in 7 days.

Mombasa county government has sacked dozens of doctors, including KMPDU boss Chibanzi Mwachonda and senior specialists for refusing to return to work.
In a letter signed by county secretary Jeizan Faruk, Governor Hassan Joho’s administration dismissed 86 striking workers for boycotting duty. Following the correspondence shared between the Department of Health and the County Public Service Board on the doctors strike, the Board, pursuant to Section 59 (1) (c) of the County Governments Act number 17 of 2012, hereby conveys its decision via Special Board meeting held on January 5, 2021 that all the doctors who have failed, refused and/or neglected to return to work be dismissed from county services as provided for under Section 44 (4) (a), (c) and (e) of the Employment Act 2007 which constitute justifiable or lawful grounds for the dismissal as highlighted in the Act, the devolved unit said.
