Following a call for applications earlier this year, five early-career researchers from around the world will be joining the eLife Early-Career Advisory Group (ECAG) this month. The five new ECAG members are: Elizabeth Ochola (Kenya), Facundo Romani (Argentina), Lana Sinapayen (Japan), Lara Urban (New Zealand), and Aalok Varma (India). The aim of ECAG is to help eLife reform research communication and to promote a research culture that is healthy for science and for scientists.

You can now access free treatment for schistosomiasis (bilharzia) in Lamu, Taita Taveta, Kilifi, Tana River, Kwale and Mombasa. Schistosomiasis is a chronic disease caused by parasitic worms that infect people during routine agricultural, domestic, occupational, and recreational activities that expose them to infested water.
Infection happens when larval forms of the parasite released by freshwater snails, penetrate the skin during contact with infested water. Residents of parts of central, lower eastern regions and the Lake Basin are also at risk of contracting the disease.

Prof Hamo, Jemutai Conduct DNA After Churchill s Intervention

Hot 96 radio presenter Herman Gakobo Kago (Professor Hamo) and his fellow comedian, Stella Bunei Koitie (Jemutai Chibambe) conducted DNA tests to determine the paternity of their children.

Churchill offered to intervene and resolve the spat between the two after Jemutai alleged that Hamo had absconded his fatherly duties. Yes, Hamo, his brother and I were at a restaurant on Wednesday (May 6). We met Churchill and a few guys on Monday, May 4 to sort out issues. We are still finding solutions to the matter.

The gene sequencing that was carried out a week ago at Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) detected the B.1.617 variant dubbed a ‘double mutant’, a dominant strain that is spreading quickly in India.
Kisumu Health Executive Boaz Nyunya said there were 150 samples tested three weeks ago at the factory, of which 100 tested positive while eight were confirmed to have the Indian variant.

He revealed that most of those who tested positive were of Indian origin and had recently travelled from their home country. Health personnel placed them in isolation and they are recovering well.
