Genesee County Will Receive $12 Million In Pandemic Rental Assistance

130 Renters in Genesee County, Michigan, facing eviction due to the coronavirus pandemic, can now get federal rental assistance through a county program. The Genesee County Community Action Resource Department (GCCARD) has received more than $12 million in federal funds for tenants. Residents who have a household income less than 80% of the area median income. According to M-Live, residents also must have experienced a reduction or loss in income or include at least one person who qualifies for unemployment insurance or financial hardship due to the pandemic. Residents must also show they are at risk of eviction or housing instability. Those who qualify for rental assistance can receive up to a year’s worth of back rent and three months of projected rental assistance. Those who apply can also receive funds for paying off utilities including electricity, heating, water, sewer, and trash collection.

Darrough, 32, and Dallas Whiting-Popielski, 30 have now joined a group of fellow inmates, to graduate from the IGNITE program and will have a fresh start going from behind bars to new jobs. The three have graduated after learning a new trade and skills to receive their ServSafe food and beverage certificates.

The IGNITE (Inmate Growth Naturally and Intentionally Through Education) program, announced in September, expanded the jail’s education program beyond just the ability to earn a GED. Now, the sheriff’s office is expanding IGNITE again. The program, which aims to break the cycle of generational incarceration negatively affecting families and communities, is made possible through the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with Mt. Morris Consolidated Schools.
