Parents, students and alumni of the Cape Henlopen School District should expect graduating students to emerge as young adults who know how to think critically, are open and listen to opinions and thoughts of others, and behave as informed, considerate and concerned citizens. These young people should understand their communities and the world are made up of individuals from diverse backgrounds with varying experiences who should be accorded the same opportunities and respect all citizens expect to enjoy. This understanding leads to upholding the values of equal rights for all. The extent to which students learn these qualities is directly related to the Cape Henlopen schools and the decisions board members make regarding curricula, extracurricular programs, and funding.

On May 11 I look forward to casting my vote in the Cape school board elections for Janis Hanwell, our incumbent Cape Henlopen board of education member at-large. Having previously served within the Cape Henlopen District as teacher, principal and assistant superintendent, I can’t imagine better credentials for anyone committed to serving the diverse needs of the children of our district. Janis’ perspective is firmly grounded in an in-depth understanding of the history of our rapidly growing district, which administrative and teaching practices need to be preserved, as well as which critical issues need to be addressed so that the needs of all students are met, regardless of their socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.

This letter is in support of Janis Hanwell’s re-election to the Cape Henlopen School District Board of Education.
I have known Janis for many years, and have witnessed her hard and smart work for the students and families of Cape Henlopen as a teacher, special education coordinator, principal, assistant superintendent, and the project manager of the construction of the high school. I have always said that she is one of the most intelligent and skilled people I have ever met. She is also very humble and cares about people, education and the community. She has been a wonderful part of the Cape Henlopen School District for the majority of her career and now continues to use her knowledge and expertise on the school board.

Please vote for Janis Hanwell! For so many, many years Janis has worked for the benefit of the students of the Cape Henlopen School District.
As a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent, and now as a school board member, her insight and reasonable approach have been, without doubt, invaluable to our district during the pandemic. Having the expertise of Janis Hanwell is an enormous asset to our district during these very difficult educational times. Vote Hanwell May 11.

Cape Henlopen School District voters will go to the polls Tuesday, May 11, to make a choice in the school board election. Incumbent Janis Hanwell faces a challenge from Ashley Murray, who is making her first run for public office.
We agree with Murray that education should be the district’s first priority, and that students should be brought back into the classrooms, in person, as soon as possible. But Hanwell’s experience as a teacher, administrator and school board member give her a decided edge in understanding the nuances that play into addressing those fundamental priorities. Hanwell offers the best choice for helping Cape Henlopen School District remain one of the state’s premier public school systems.
