Queensland Police are hoping to crack a mystery of more than two decades surrounding the suspicious disappearance of a woman while hitchhiking in the far north of the state.
Joanne Butterfield was 37 when she disappeared in June 1998 near the Captain Cook Highway north of Cairns, after telling friends she planned to hitchhike south.

Three days later the embroidered bag she took everywhere with her was found between a public lookout and the bank of a cane train track near Innisfail, about two hours south.

Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Infrastructure Transport and Regional Development Minister Barnaby Joyce said for the first time since August 2018, the barriers and bollards have come down to reveal a new, six-lane stretch of the Bruce Highway between Links Drive (formerly Kate Street) and Aumuller Street.
“The completion of the K2A project is a significant achievement for Far North Queensland,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

Today, Port Douglas is like a stroppy starlet that has grown-up into a more mature and grounded luminary. She feels relaxed, upmarket and utterly comfortable in her own skin. I loved taking long walks along the divine crescent-shaped sweep of Four Mile Beach, fringed with coconut palms and decked in soft golden sands.
