Sea Level Rise Committee presents proposal before CEPD

The Captiva Erosion Prevention District’s commission recently heard from the Captiva Community Panel’s Sea Level Rise Committee about a funds request to continue with its adaption planning.
At a CEPD workshop on March 4, members of the panel’s SLR Committee presented the district commissioners with an Adaptation Alternatives Proposal prepared by its consultant, Cheryl Hapke of Integral Consulting, along with a request for the CEPD to partially fund or fund the $34,400 cost.
Panel Member and SLR Committee Chair Linda Laird kicked off the presentation by providing background on Hapke and her firm and an overview of their collaborative work done to date.

CEPD approves up to $150K for new position at SCCF

The Captiva Erosion Prevention District’s commissioners recently approved up to $150,000 over two years for the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation to create and hire a sea level rise captain.
At a special meeting on Feb. 19, Chairman Rene Miville, Vice Chair John Silvia and Treasurer Dick Pyle voted 3-0 to fund the SLR “captain” position in the amount of up to $75,000 in year one and up to $75,000 in year two. Secretary Harry Kaiser and Commissioner Mike Mullins had excused absences.
Prior to the vote, SCCF Chief Executive Officer Ryan Orgera provided a presentation outlining the reasons for creating the proposed job, the CEPD’s role and requested funds, and duties of the position.

The Captiva Community Panel’s Sea Level Rise Committee recently discussed a proposal from its consultant to continue with adaption planning and came up with a possible way for funding the work.
During a special meeting on Feb. 17, the committee reviewed the Bayside Adaptation proposal submitted by Cheryl Hapke, of Integral Consulting. She has been assisting the group with gathering information on the effects of sea level rise on Captiva, including defining assets, consulting experts, outlining areas of vulnerability and offering alternative approaches for resiliency and adaptation.
