It was 40 years ago that Coventry band The Specials sang about ghost towns. At the time, the song was seen as a comment on urban decay and deprivation in inner cities. But it could just as well be an anthem for the Covid-19 era.
The latest statistics around the high street make for alarming reading. The constant cycle of lockdowns has crippled footfall, which reached an all-time low last May, when the British Retail Consortium reported a 77.8% year-on-year decline.

Forget flowers and chocolates this Valentine’s Day. Communication expert Keith Hardeman knows that the real test of any relationship lies in how a couple handles times of crisis. After nearly 30 years of marriage, the Columbia resident and his wife, Shelley, faced just such a test when she was diagnosed in late 2017 with Stage III breast cancer.
Hardeman was quickly thrust into the role of caregiver and, for the next 14 months, helped support Shelley through the horrors of intense chemotherapy, radiation, and surgeries, as well as anxiety-provoking scans and a range of often debilitating side effects, some of which still linger today.
