Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday hailed Mamata Banerjee for her spectacular victory in the West Bengal Assembly polls and said the BJP has met its match in Bengal and lost.
Mr Tharoor, who campaigned extensively for the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the Kerala polls, also expressed disappointment with the results in the state where the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front was all set to retain power with a thumping mandate. NEW DELHI: Mamata Banerjee rode the BJP challenge to take her Trinamool Congress to triumph for a third consecutive term in West Bengal on Sunday while the BJP was set to return in Assam and the LDF in Kerala, signature victories for ruling parties which decisively beat the anti-incumbency syndrome.
However, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry voted against the incumbents – AIADMK prepared to cede space to the opposition DMK-led alliance in the former and the AINRC-led NDA headed toward power in the latter.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his congratulations to Banerjee, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and DMK s M K Stalin.

New Delhi: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday (May 2) took to Twitter to congratulate West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on her party’s massive win in the assembly elections.
Singh’s statement came as the election result trends showed a clear victory for the TMC that crossed the 200-mark in the 294-seat assembly.
“Congratulations to the Chief Minister of West Bengal, @MamataOfficial Didi on her party’s victory in West Bengal assembly elections. My best wishes to her for her next tenure,” Singh tweeted.
