COVID-19 positive arrested journalist Siddique Kappan handcuffed on hospital bed, says wife By News Desk|   Posted by Neha  |   Published: 24th April 2021 11:09 pm IST Courtesy Muslim Mirror New Delhi: Journalist Siddique Kappan, who is lodged in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura prison since October 2020, has been denied the “basic human right to go to a toilet”, his wife Raihana Kappan told THE WEEK today. The Delhi-based journalist from Kerala is currently admitted to K.M. Medical College, Mathura. Kappan was arrested at Mathura by the Uttar Pradesh Police in October 2020, while on his way to Hathras to report on the gangrape and murder of a Dalit girl, which had triggered nationwide outrage. The journalist was booked under the Draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Kappan collapsed in the bathroom with serious injuries on April 20, the plea said, and later tested positive for Covid. He s presently at a hospital in Mathura. Prior to his hospitalisation, Kappan was lodged at Mathura jail. The plea said: It is reliably believed that more than 50 inmates of Mathura jail suffering from Covid, with various of scarcities, and even drinking water from the toilet, seriously affecting hygiene, health, all leading to a major disaster in the making. In short, as of today, the life of Mr Siddique Kappan is in danger for all reasons. Kappan was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police in October when he was on his way to Hathras to report on the gangrape and murder of a Dalit woman. He was booked under the UAPA and charges of sedition, and has been in jail ever since.

The petition filed by the KUWJ, before the Apex Court, said that Kappan is presently in KM Medical College, Mathura, but his life is in danger due to medical conditions, and he is in need of immediate shifting for better treatment at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.
