The ₹64,000-cr project will reduce 529-km Thiruvananthapuram-Kasaragod travel time to just 4 hours. The Union Finance Ministry has finally approved the revised debt-fund raising plan for the ₹64,000-crore semi-high speed rail project connecting Kerala capital Thiruvananthapuram with its northern tip Kasaragod, a top state government official has said. The Japanese development agency JICA had earlier committed to funding ₹33,700 crore approved by the Union Finance Ministry as well in 2019. Later, JICA massively curtailed its exposure, following which the Union Finance Ministry asked us to submit a revised debt raising plan that was sent shortly.
In a letter to chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, dated January 5, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman asked Kerala Rail Development Corporation (K-Rail), the nodal implementation agency, to expedite land acquisition for the most ambitious project of the state till date after obtaining necessary clearances.

Directive to issue tender for approach road work on February 2 Close on the heels of the steps to expedite track doubling and renovation of the Kottayam railway station, a delegation of Southern Railway officials and Thomas Chazhikadan, MP, on Wednesday reviewed the progress of work on the railway overbridges (RoB) coming up in Kottayam.
During the meeting, Railways informed that work on the RoB at Mulanthuruthy had been completed as early as 2018 while work on the bridge at Carithas was on the final stages. The authorities are now awaiting nod from the Railway Safety Commissioner to carry out the remaining work on these two RoBs.

RTC, KIIFB to jointly construct 2-lakh-sq ft building complex in capital The crisis-ridden Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will get ₹1,800 crore as assistance from the State government during 2021-2022. “The assistance includes ₹1,000 crore earmarked for salary, pension, and loan repayment,” Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac said.
An amount of ₹25 crore can be saved a month on fuel expenditure by converting 3,000 buses to eco-friendly CNG/ LNG engines. For this conversion to environment friendly fuel, an amount of ₹50 crore has been allocated in the Budget.

Funds to be made available from KIIFB The Angamaly-Sabarimala rail project has got a new lease of life with Kerala agreeing to bear 50% of the estimate of ₹2,815.62 crore.
Bowing to the stance of the Railways and the Centre that the State should share 50% of the cost of the Sabari rail project, the Cabinet on Wednesday decided to make available funds from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).
The Railways will be responsible for the construction and maintenance of the 116-km Angamaly-Azhutha Sabari rail, while the en route station development will be through public-private partnership and a special purpose vehicle. The income will be shared 50:50 between the State and the Railways after deducting the expenses, official sources said.
