New tugboat helps modernize Parker Towing Co. s fleet When Capt. Larry Norris pilots a marine vessel down river with barges strung out in front of his tug, he knows the river can put up a fight. You have hours and hours of sheer boredom. It s what you get used to, Norris said Friday during the christening of Parker Towing Co. s new tug, the Jared Phillips. But, if you ve never been over here, it s a fight. You have to fight against the bottom of the river. If the river comes up and falls out real quick, the bottom will change up. Between Oliver Lock and Fosters, the turns are real sharp. Once you get below that, they start to lengthen out, but up here they are real sharp.
