Cambodian officials have condemned a Co Mayo artist for doctoring archive photos of Khmer Rouge genocide victims to show them smiling in prison.
Vice News pulled Matt Loughrey s work off its site yesterday, later saying the article did not meet its editorial standards and publishing it was an error .
Mr Loughrey claims he had moral reasons for adding the smiles, and the permission of victims relatives which the Cambodian Ministry of Culture says is not true.
Dr Emily Mark-Fitzgerald, head of the School of Art History at UCD, says the altered images were in incredibly poor taste.

Across the country all students returned to second level schools for the first time in 2021 today.
First year students at St Joseph’s Girls Secondary School in Castlebar were delighted to be back, and four of the students - Ali Fitzgerald, Lucy Molloy, Saoirse McDonnell and Laura Beirne spoke to Midwest News about the experience, Ali began by outlining how it felt to be back in the classroom

Clifden RNLI came to the aid of two walkers who got cut off by the tide yesterday evening.
The crew were requested to launch the lifeboat by the Irish Coast Guard just before 6pm following a report that two people were stranded on Omey Island.
The inshore Atlantic 85 class lifeboat helmed by Kenny Flaherty and with three crew members onboard, launched immediately and made its way to the scene.
Weather conditions at the time were good.
Once on scene, the lifeboat crew checked that the two people were safe and well before proceeding to transfer them on to the lifeboat and bring them back to shore at Claddaghduff.

Tributes have been paid following the death of Canon John Fallon,retired parish priest of Kilmaine.
A native of Balla, Fr Fallon was ordained to the priesthood in 1964 and served as a curate in Aughagower, Clare Island, Achill Island and Louisburg, before being appointed parish priest of Achill and later Kilmaine where he remained until he retired last year.
Canon Fallon passed away at the weekend in Mayo University Hospital at the age of 81.
His Funeral Mass will take place on Wednesday at 12 noon in St Cronan s Church Balla, with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
