Reuters/File THE third wave of Covid-19 pandemic across the country has forced federal and provincial governments to adopt stringent measures including lockdown. For taking action against violators of restrictions placed by the government, different laws have assumed importance and have often been invoked by the administration. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a mix of old and new laws have been utilised by the provincial government and district administration to tackle the pandemic. Among the new laws, the most important one is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Epidemic Control and Emergency Relief Act, 2020, which was passed by the provincial assembly on July 17, 2020. This law was first introduced in form of an ordinance in May 2020.

Photo provided by author A first information report (FIR) was registered against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Minister Taimur Saleem Jhagra and the owner and manager of a restaurant in Peshawar for violating coronavirus standard operating procedures (SOPs) by hosting an iftar party on Monday. Peshawar Assistant Commissioner Ehteshamul Haq told Dawn.com that the administration took timely action after pictures of the iftar were shared on social media. The photos show that Jhagra and others are not observing social distancing and the health minister has not donned a face mask either. Dining at restaurants was banned by authorities last week to curb the spread of the coronavirus in major cities of KP, including Peshawar.

Courts in Mardan sealed due to growing Covid-19 cases

National April 21, 2021 MARDANR: The district courts in Mardan were sealed on Tuesday following an increase in Covid cases among the lawyers. An official said the district administration sealed all the courts in Mardan as well as bar rooms till further order to prevent the spread of the Covid. “The district administration closed local courts due to the increasing numbers of corona positive cases and to control the spread of Covid-19,” a notification issued from the office of deputy commissioner said.
