How to Try Siri s New iOS Voices Today

How to Try Siri s New iOS Voices Today Screenshot: David Murphy Apple is changing up how Siri works in iOS 14.5. She’s still the same ol’ virtual assistant you can use to do all kinds of fun activities on your iPhone. However, she’s no longer going to default to being a “she.” You’ll soon be asked to pick a female or male voice for the digital assistant, which is a subtle but important shift away from an arguably sexist practice. Advertisement Apple is also dropping in two new Siri voices for English speakers, and you can try both of them right now as long as you don’t mind jumping into a fairly developed iOS developer beta. I say that because I usually recommend people stick to public betas whenever possible if they really must install a still in-the-works operating system on their primary carry devices at all.

Setting Default Music Apps in iOS 14 5 Isn t a Thing After All

Photo: Caitlin McGarry/Gizmodo What appeared to be one of the most exciting features of iOS 14.5 turns out to work a little differently than it originally seemed. Advertisement Last month, Redditors discovered that the iOS 14.5 beta presented a new menu when a user asked Siri to play music. That menu offered app alternatives for music playback, including Spotify, rather than deferring to Apple Music. In some cases, Siri would play music in that same non-Apple Music app the next time you asked, though not every time. As Gizmodo reported at the time, sometimes Siri would play the song in Spotify, for example, if requested, but sometimes in Apple Music. Other times Siri would again display that same menu to select an app. It appeared as though this might be a new, if buggy, feature for selecting a different default music app, as Apple recently allowed users to change their default browser and email apps in iOS 14. But now, it seems that is not the case.
