We all know Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Frederick Douglass. But who are the other great black voices of the past?
For 18 years, the African American Cultural Society has hosted the Youth Black History Reality Show, giving local children and teens a chance to research the answer to that question and present their findings to a live audience. This year, it will be online only, but Program Chairperson Jeanette Wheeler hopes that can give the show an even broader audience.
An 18-year-old student athlete at Flagler Palm Coast High School was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Sunday while on the job delivering pizza in western Flagler County.
Nehemiah Gilyard, a junior who lived in Bunnell, competed on the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs track and field team and the football team, according to a Facebook post from his track coach Dave Halliday.
“It is with great sadness and pain in my heart that I am writing this post,” Halliday said.
Counselors will be on campus at Flagler Palm Coast High School to help students, said Jason Wheeler, spokesman for the Flagler County School District. The counselors will remain on campus for as long as needed, he wrote.

Nehemiah Gilyard was a funny, caring student with an “infectious smile” at Flagler Palm Coast High School, where he played football and ran track. He was driving alone on the night of Feb. 14, when he crashed into the trees on the side of County Road 302 and died. He was 18.
“I, as well as our entire Flagler Schools community mourn the loss of Nehemiah Gilyard, a young man taken too soon from his family this weekend,” Flagler Schools Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt wrote in a tweet.
FPC football coach Travis Roland tweeted the following on Feb. 15: “How do you explain the unexplainable to your teenage players. Especially when hours before you find out the unthinkable, the defensive staff was talking about how he was about to have a breakout year as a senior! We Love You! Rest With Him”
Flagler Palm Coast High School weightlifter Annie Buchanan has officially joined the winner’s circle after her top finish at the Class 3A FHSAA Girls Weightlifting State Championships on Feb. 13.
Buchanan earned her spot after completing all six lift attempts (235 for the bench press and 215 for the clean and jerk) for a total of 450 in the 199-pound weight division. George Jenkins’ Dallas Dickey was second place with a 365-pound total.
“I was super excited,” Buchanan said. “I was just smiling ear to ear after I finished lifting!”
Buchanan is only the third lifter in FPC’s history to walk away as a state champion. One of the other two is her older sister, Lexi Buchanan then a sophomore who took the state title in 2018 (425 total). Three short years later, the two share the same honor.
