WHITEVILLE Two men from Hope Mills were robbed and shot, and one of the men died, according to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.
On Nov. 29, just after 9 p.m., deputies responded to the 100 block of Sellers Town Road in Whiteville in reference to an unresponsive male on the ground, according to a news release.
When they arrived they found George Cleveland Stump Sr., 73, in a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound and Tristan Lavonne Stavee, 23, unresponsive on the ground, according to the release.
Stump was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is listed in critical condition. Stavee died at the scene, the release said.

WHITEVILLE, N.C. (WECT) - A Columbus County employee has been arrested and charged with 14 counts of larceny and 14 counts of obtaining property by false pretense for using a county gas card for personal use.
Messiah Maurice Brown, 20, was arrested last week but the investigation started in November.
“In November, Columbus County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division initiated an investigation after being notified by the Purchasing Agent for the County of Columbus. The Purchasing Agent noticed questionable gas purchases on a county credit card. Investigators learned that a County of Columbus Maintenance Department gas card was unaccounted for. The same gas card was used to make unauthorized premium gas purchases,” according to the
