The Central Coast is desperate for substitute teachers.
Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Santa Barbara County Education Office told our team that California saw declining applications for substitute teachers. However, starting in March 2020, administrators say even fewer substitutes wanted to step into Zoom or in-person classes.
Central Coast school districts got creative when it came to recruiting and training new substitute teachers. At the Santa Barbara County Office of Education, there were 91 substitute teachers prior to the lockdown, which decreased to 36 last May.

Speaking of staff, Lewis said that about 420 of the district s 760 employees have received COVID-19 vaccination doses. Of the total, 63 declined, 18 asked to delay their vaccinations and about 250 people have not responded to the offer for a vaccine. We figure they probably don t want it, Lewis said. Pretty much any employee who wants the vaccine has been able to get vaccinated or gotten an appointment to be vaccinated.

After almost a year of remote instruction, Goleta Union School District is gearing up to return to the classroom in the near future, albeit with some changes.Â
According to Mary Kahn, assistant superintendent of instructional services, from the beginning of remote instruction in April 2020, the Goleta Union School District (GUSD) has prepared three learning models that they could pursue depending on public health guidelines and the severity of COVID-19 infections in the Santa Barbara area.Â
Though the in-person learning option on this survey still followed the five-day modified schedule, the risk of contracting COVID-19 was a concern for parents and the rest of the district.
