Body, motorcycle found 456 feet below Grand Canyon rim

March 4 (UPI) The National Park Service said Thursday that Park Rangers had recovered the body of a missing Kentucky man in the Grand Canyon, bringing an end to a multi-day search and rescue operation.
Park rangers discovered the body Wednesday near a yellow motorcycle in the canyon some 465 feet below the rim of the South Kaibab Trailhead, the service said in a statement.

Officials said they believe the body is of John Pennington, 40, from Walton, Ky., who is thought to have entered the Grand Canyon on Feb. 23.

The search for a missing Kentucky man at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon has come to a tragic end. National Park Service personnel located a body and motorcycle below the South Kaibab Trailhead Wednesday, following a multi-day search and rescue operation. Park Rangers recovered the body, which was located about 465-feet below the rim. Park spokeswoman Joelle Baird says “he was found below the rim with his motorcycle.” She added, “we can’t be sure he was riding the motorcycle over the edge, but we believe, at this time, that he was on his motorcycle.” The body was taken by helicopter to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office. Based on evidence found with the body, the person is believed to be 40-year-old John Pennington. Pennington was last known to be near Yaki Point. Park rangers said that the recovered body was located approximately 465 feet below the rim and was transported to the rim by helicopter.

A body believed to be that of a Kentucky man previously reported missing at Grand Canyon National Park was found along with a motorcycle inside the canyon, park officials said Thursday.

Evidence found with the body indicated it was Pennington, who was believed to have entered the park on or about Feb. 23, the statement said.
The National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examinerâs Office were investigating the incident, the statement said.
