(KGTV) A man and woman from Vista were killed after the small plane they were in crashed in northern Arizona, authorities said.
According to the Coconino County Sheriffâs Office, a small plane departed Sedona Airport Sunday morning and was scheduled to arrive at the Grand Canyon National Park Airport at 9 a.m. local time. The distance between the two airports is about 109 miles.
Timothy Michael Gill, 37, and Joylani Roseann Kamalu, 38, died when the small aircraft they were riding in for a short flight to the Grand Canyon Airport.
Investigators immediately focused on attempting to search for the aircraft at the Sedona and Grand Canyon airports, the Coconino County Sheriff s Office said.
Gill s parents said they believe the plane carrying their son and daughter-in-law crashed on Thursday as the couple was in Arizona to celebrate Kamalu s 40th birthday. They re not sure how it happened, but think something caused the plane to lose altitude.
The investigation eventually led law enforcement officers to an area near the Williams Airport, also known as the HA Clark Airfield, about halfway on the plane s scheduled route, authorities said.
A crashed plane was located in a wooded area at about 1:40 a.m. on Monday, the sheriff s office said.

Two Vista residents were killed in a plane crash during a flight across Arizona, authorities said Monday.
Authorities had launched a search for Timothy Michael Gill, 37, and Joylani Roseann Kamalu, 38, after deputies in Arizona’s Coconino County received a report of an overdue plane about 6 p.m. Sunday. A family member said they had not reported to work earlier in the day, according to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.
The pair had departed from the Sedona Airport and headed for the Grand Canyon Airport for an appointment in the area, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities launched a search, calling in state and U.S. Air Force resources. The Air Force, which was asked to determine the last known direction and location of the aircraft, directed searchers to an area northeast of H.A. Clark Memorial Field airport in Williams, Ariz.
