Grades 7-12 in Fort McMurray move online due to rising COVID-19 cases

  EDMONTON Both public and senior high schools from the Fort McMurray public and Catholic school divisions will move online starting Monday due to increasing COVID-19 cases. In a joint news release, both Fort McMurray Public School Division and Fort McMurray Catholic Schools requested permission from the Ministry of Education to move grade seven to 12 classes online due to increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases in the community, as well as staff and students in isolation. The ministry approved the request Friday. Classes will be online starting Monday until April 30. Jennifer Turner, Fort McMurray public schools superintendent, said in a statement that moving online will help alleviate staffing challenges that both public and Catholic school districts are facing.

In a joint status sent Friday evening, the schools made the request to Alberta Education on Thursday as COVID-19 cases rise locally. As of Friday, there are seven schools with outbreaks. Another three schools are on alert status. With a rate of 787 cases per 100,000 people, the municipality is behind the counties of Barrhead, Camrose and Athabasca. Beginning April 19, grades 7 to 12 will be switching to online learning until April 30th. A joint application for the move was made to the Ministry of Education on Thursday due to the continual increase of COVID-19 numbers and staff and students in isolation. “We all agree in school is the best place for learning, but the overall COVID-19 numbers in Fort McMurray right now are very worrisome,” said George McGuigan, FMCSD Superintendent.
