Direction Dreams: Tamil film industry was healthier in the hands of filmmakers, says Mahendran

When did you realise cinema was your calling? When I came to Chennai, getting into the film industry wasn’t the plan. I was doing a boring job, but interestingly, the friends I made were all from the film industry. When I used to sit with them for their story discussions, I ended up having a dilemma if I should give it a shot and if yes, which department to get into. I took 40 days to decide and finally decided on becoming a director. I realised getting into films isn’t going to be easy, so I started with serials and I gradually moved to the bigger medium.

Vijayan looks back on working in Shankar-Kamal Haasan's 'Indian' that completed 25 years yesterday- The New Indian Express

Express News Service Success begets success, it seems. Kamal Haasan was fresh out of Kuruthipunal, India’s official entry for the 68th Academy Awards. Shankar was aiming for a hat-trick after successive hits in Gentleman (1993) and Kadhalan (1994). Producer AM Rathnam, after success in Telugu cinema, was looking to make a statement in Tamil cinema. AR Rahman’s earlier release, Love Birds, was full of chartbusters. Editors B Lenin and VT Vijayan had previously worked on Shankar’s first two films and were keen to replicate the success. With such a rich repository of artists, all on the cusp of great fame, Indian came out to great critical acclaim and was chosen as India’s official entry for the Academy Awards in 1996.

'Without Remorse' movie review: All action, No thrill

Since the 90s, the film adaptations of novelist Tom Clancy’s novels have been winners. Without Remorse now streaming on Amazon Prime is also based on the writer’s 1993 thriller, but could cause remorse in Clancy fans. Initially planned as a mid-90s production, it was stuck in development hell for decades. Starring Michael B Jordan, the movie has stayed stuck in the 90s, in spite of the hardcore action. It is hard to believe that the film has been adapted from a Clancy book. The plot bears little resemblance to its source material and the best parts are not even featured. Take the lead for example: In the novel, John Kelly breaks down a drug ring and saves the girls, before work calls him back to Vietnam for a new mission. In the film, John Kelly (an in-form Michael B Jordan), however, is out on a no-holds-barred mission to avenge the brutal death of his pregnant wife. Why was she killed? Who killed her? How does it tie up with the US government? Director Stefano Sollima happily bypasses any explanations.

INTERVIEW | I will let people form their opinions about me: Ma Anand Sheela on Netflix docu-film

Express News Service A godman thriving in India before travelling and settling in a foreign country, might seem like recent news, but Rajneesh, famously known as Osho, did it way back in 1981. His plan to move to Oregon, USA, was ideated by his-then assistant Ma Anand Sheela who went on to manage the new ashram for a few years. But when controversy erupted and ended her association with Osho, Sheela, after time in prison, settled in Switzerland. In 2018, a Netflix documentary Wild Wild Country shed light once again on the life of the controversial Indian guru, his assistant and their Rajneeshpuram community. Now, Netflix has come up with another docu-film named

Direction Dreams: Tamil film industry is competing on a global scale, says Ramya Kalingarayar

When did you realise cinema was your calling? I am a huge fan of Vikram and I kept a tab on his films and interviews. In one such interview, he said acting doesn’t feel like work as he enjoys doing it. That struck the first chord in me. I chose Viscom in college and then went to LV Prasad Film Institute to study filmmaking. That’s when I made a short film and put it up on YouTube, mainly to share with my friends. After two weeks, I got a call from a journalist saying the video had gone viral and they wanted to interview me.
