Texans rally to protect the vote in Houston this month. The vote is sacred. In not voting, you cede your voice to others.Steve Gonzales /Staff photographer
I voted when I was 18. I don’t remember who I voted for, only that it was a civic rite of passage, a coming-of-age life event. After that, I was inconsistent. It is something I regret.
I now see that every time I didn’t vote, I sent the message that I didn’t care enough to know the issues or the people. Even worse, my lack of voting showed I didn’t value the work and sacrifices of every activist, politician and military service member who established and protected voting rights.

Officials with the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce said many downtown members were among the Bexar County business closures.
Bexar County Commissioners voted Tuesday to grant $600,000 to 13 local chambers of commerce who lost business members or covered their business members dues during the pandemic.
Many businesses stopped paying membership fees to local chambers or closed due to the pandemic. The president and CEO of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, Richard Perez, said many downtown members were among the closures. We have seen about 250 members cease to exist. Their business is closed and most of them permanently. So we were at 2,000 now we are at about 1,800, he said.
The daughter of a Comal Independent School District trustee and two other girls last seen leaving a middle school campus mid-afternoon on Tuesday have been found, authorities said.
Jennifer Smith, Comal County Sheriffâs Office public information officer, said San Antonio police located the three girls, Laila Garner, Adamari Perez and Audrey Willhight, who were previously last seen leaving Smithson Valley Middle School in a light blue Chevy sedan around 3 p.m. Tuesday.
âAfter an extensive law enforcement search, all three juvenile girls were located in downtown San Antonio and are being released to their parents,â Smith said. âWe would like to thank the San Antonio Police Department for their assistance in the search.â
