Artist Vignesh Raj couldn’t have had a better start to the year. The Coimbatore-based youngster recently received the State award from the International Institute of Tamil Studies, for his painting, based on Chapter 112 from the Thirukkural Nalam Punainthuraithal (which comprises kurals 1111 to 1120). He received the award from the Minister for Tamil Official Language, Tamil Culture and Archeology, K Pandiarajan on February 24 in Chennai.The Thirukkural Oviya Potti is held every year and the announcement for this year’s contest was made in January. The paintings were submitted by February 3.

COIMBATORE: The district police on Tuesday arrested a 52-year-old man for allegedly murdering a daily wager on Anaikatti Road at Thadagam area.
The accused has been identified as R Vellingiri, a resident of Othakalmandapam while the deceased has been identified as S Jayakumar, 25, a resident of Edayarpalayam.
On Monday, at around 10.30pm, Jayakumar was consuming liquor with two of his friends – Krishnakumar and Suresh. The two friends worked at a brick kiln in Thadagam..
A police officer said that while Jayakumar was under the influence of alcohol, he noticed Vellingiri eating parottas at an eatery near DSP bus stop in Thadagam. He went on to grab a piece parotta from the man’s plate and ate it without his approval.
COIMBATORE: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) police, Coimbatore, on Monday filed a petition before the special court under Tamil Nadu Protection of Interests of Depositors (in financial establishments) Act (TNPID), seeking seven days’ police custody of universal trading solutions (UTS) firm managing director in connection with cheating cases.
S Albert, deputy superintendent of police, EOW, filed the petition before the special court judge AS Ravi.
The managing director was identified as G Ramesh, 31, and was accused of cheating thousands of investors in Coimbatore and its neighbouring districts.
In June 2019, M Ramesh, 30, from Sivadhaniyapuram near Bharathiar University in Coimbatore lodged a complaint with the EOW police. He mentioned in his complaint that many people from Coimbatore city were cheated by the UTS firm located at Peelamedu.

COIMBATORE: A four-member gang that stole an automated teller machine (ATM) of Bank of Baroda from near Uthukuli in Tirupur district in the early hours of Sunday abandoned it at Velliyampalayam in Erode district after taking cash from it. The damaged ATM was found on Monday. The gang removed the ATM containing Rs 1,00,100 by pulling it with a sport utility vehicle (SUV) after connecting both with a crane belt. They escaped with the ATM. A CCTV camera recoded the act.
The gang abandoned the SUV near Perundurai in Erode district and shifted the ATM to another vehicle. They brought the machine to a vacant land at Velliyampalayam where they broke it open with a gas cutter and took away the cash in it. The gang then consumed liquor and later left the ATM there.
