COIMBATORE: The Mettupalayam police arrested a 50-year-old labourer on Friday for murdering his wife over a family dispute.
The arrested man has been identified as P Murugesh, 50, of Arivozhi Nagar Kuttai. He was a drunkard. Murugesh murdered his wife Parvathi whom he married 10 years go. It was his second marriage.
He often suspected Parvathi’s character and picked up a quarrel with her. On Thursday night, he returned home in an inebriated condition and fought with her. He assaulted her with a log and a small iron pipe. She suffered injuries on her head, hands and legs. She died on the spot.
The gutted ATM
COIMBATORE: An ATM was gutted at Vettaikaranpudur near Pollachi in the early hours of Friday when a miscreant attempted to break it open with a gas cutter.
A man, who covered his face with cloths and covered his hands with gloves, entered an ATM room belonging to South Indian Bank around 2.50 am. He attempted to break the ATM open using a gas cutter. When fire broke out, the miscreant fled the scene.
The entire sequences were recorded in CCTV cameras in the ATM room. The bank authorities received information about the fire around 3.40am and rushed to the ATM spot. Fire and rescue services personnel put out the blaze around 4am.

COIMBATORE: Two infants died within hours of being administered the pentavalent and rotavirus vaccines in Coimbatore on Wednesday.
The state health secretary and immunization experts said vaccination was unlikely to be the cause of the deaths. The children, both boys aged two-and-a half months, were vaccinated at different places. One child was vaccinated with 13 others at an anganwadi at Masakalipalayam in Coimbatore around 10.30am on Wednesday. He was declared dead a couple of hours later, after he was hospitalised with breathing problems. The second child was given pentavalent, rotavirus and polio vaccines on Wednesday morning at the Sowripalayam PHC. CHENNAI: The Class XII state board exam schedule took many schools by surprise as they were expecting the exams to be held by the end of May or early June. According to the timetable announced by the directorate of government exams (DGE) on Wednesday, the exams will begin on May 3 and end on May 21.
More than 8 lakh students will appear for the boards this year. Exams will be conducted from 10 am to 1.15 pm with the first 15 minutes being given to read the question paper and verify particulars in the answer sheet.
Schools said the new time-table gives them just 74 days to complete the syllabus, revise the lessons and hold model exams. Some teachers said they may have to rush through the lessons to finish the syllabus. However, others said the time-table will ensure the next academic year started on time.
