Police reshuffle raises eyebrows | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: The en masse transfer of police personnel in the district after DMK came to power has raised eyebrows. More than 80% of police officers, including 30 of the 40 inspectors, eight assistant commissioners of police (ACPs), six deputy superintendent of police (DSPs), deputy commissioners and even the city police commissioner were shunted out after the new government was formed. The wind of change had started blowing through the district during the election season. Former Coimbatore collector K Rajamani and city police commissioner Sumit Sharan were transferred after DMK leaders petitioned the Election Commission of India (ECI). S Nagarajan and Davidson Devasirvatham replaced them respectively. Later, superintendent of police Ara Arularasu and additional superintendent of police G S Anitha were transferred. S Selvanagarathinam was appointed superintendent of police. Inspector general of police (west zone) K Periaiah was transferred and Dhinakaran was posted west zone IG. Dhinakaran was later replaced by Amalraj.

Burglary attempt foiled after ATM catches fire in Pollachi | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: An ATM owned by the South Indian Bank at Vettaikaranpudur near Pollachi was gutted on Friday morning after a burglar tried to open it using a gas cutter. CCTV cameras captured a man, with his face covered with a piece of cloth and wearing gloves, enter the ATM centre at 2.50am. He attempted to open the currency chest using a gas cutter for 10 minutes, but was forced to flee when a fire broke out. Bank authorities received information about the fire around 3.40am and rushed to the ATM centre. After trying to put out the fire on their own, they contacted the Pollachi fire service station and a team of firefighters reached the place to extinguish it at 4am.

The gutted ATM COIMBATORE: An ATM was gutted at Vettaikaranpudur near Pollachi in the early hours of Friday when a miscreant attempted to break it open with a gas cutter. A man, who covered his face with cloths and covered his hands with gloves, entered an ATM room belonging to South Indian Bank around 2.50 am. He attempted to break the ATM open using a gas cutter. When fire broke out, the miscreant fled the scene. The entire sequences were recorded in CCTV cameras in the ATM room. The bank authorities received information about the fire around 3.40am and rushed to the ATM spot. Fire and rescue services personnel put out the blaze around 4am.

Leaving dead body in lake, cops fight over jurisdiction | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: In a complete disrespect to a dead person, the Selvapuram and Vadavalli police on Tuesday entered into a jurisdictional dispute while leaving the body in Nagarajapuram tank, where it was found around 7am on the day, till 6.30pm. According to a police source, the body, with its head covered in a polythene bag, was first spotted by Nagarajapuram villagers, who went to attend nature’s call near the waterbody in the morning. “Half of the body (till hip) was on the lake bund, while the remaining part was in the water. Two liquor bottles were also found near the body.”

Coimbatore: The Mettupalayam police on Sunday arrested BJP functionary Kalayanaraman on charges of hate speech and creating enmity between two communities. He was arrested following tense moments in Mettuaplayam and Coimbatore. As many as 500 cops were deployed in Mettupalayam after members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) pelted stones at a BJP meeting on Sunday evening. To support the tractor rally of farmers in New Delhi on January 26, SDPI had conducted a protest at Mettupalayam bus stand on the same day. The party cadres hurled abuses at an SDPI functionary, who had dressed up as Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Cops identify gang involved in highway robbery | Coimbatore News

Picture for representational purpose only. COIMBATORE: The rural police have identified the four-member gang that stole a car containing Rs 10 lakh from Marappalam in Madukkarai here last week. Police collected 200 CCTV footage from Coimbatore till Thrissur in Kerala to find the Alappuzha-based gang, police superintendent Ara Arularasu said. G Mohammed Mustafa, 34, a cab driver from Mannarkkad in Palakkad district, lodged a complaint with the Madukkarai police on Tuesday. He had come to Oppanakkara Street in Coimbatore along with his friend Sharjah Hussain to receive Rs 10 lakh from Kumar on January 11. The duo was returning to Mannarkkad with the money in a call taxi. When they reached Marappalam around 9pm, a four-member gang waylaid the car and broke open the glass. They forced the duo out and drove away the vehicle, which was later abandoned in Kanyakumari.

Village vigilance cops appointed across district | Coimbatore News

The officers will also start a WhatsApp group to help villagers address their various issues. As many as 283 mother villagers come under the Coimbatore district police. In total, 397 police personnel (special sub-inspectors, head constables, grade one constables) have been appointed as VVPOs. Flex boards in each village have been installed giving the mobile numbers of VVPOs, police inspector, police sub-inspector and police station numbers. "We have initiated the VVPOs across the district on January 1. The VVPOs would visit the village at least twice or thrice in a week and would meet grocery shopkeepers, autorickshaw drivers, village administrative officers (VAOs), panchayat ward members. The VVPO will be the first person to receive any information from the allotted village. He would collect advanced intelligence information from the villages," superintendent of police, Coimbatore district, Ara Arularasu said.
