Dengue makes comeback with 93 cases in 28 days | Coimbatore News

Six dengue patients, including two children, were admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, dean in-charge Dr P Kalidas said. Most cases are reported from the corporation limit, from densely populated parts including Peelamedu, Singanallur, Nanjundapuram, Rathinapuri and Ganapathy. “We are seeing isolated cases from the east zone and north zone, but no clusters yet,” city health officer Dr A Raja said. “Whenever we see a case, we immediately check for fever cases in the neighbourhood, take up peridomestic anti-breeding activities like cleaning of stagnant drains and using bleaching powder,” he said.

Picture used for representational purpose only COIMBATORE: A month after the registration department suspended five employees for syphoning off Rs 68.93 lakh from sub-registrar offices in Tirupur district, the city police on Wednesday arrested two people in connection with the case. The arrested people were identified as R Shankar, 33, of Erode district, who was working as an assistant at the Tirupur joint sub-registrar office I and Jayasankar, owner of VB Online Typing Office, which was functioning near the sub-registrar office. Police had formed a special team headed by assistant commissioner of central crime branch K Balamurugan after receiving a complainant from district registrar R Ramasamy.

Sugarcane not a sweet option for farmers | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: The area under sugarcane cultivation hasn’t improved in the district since 2017, when it had shrunk by 50% in the aftermath of the 2016 drought. Farmers cite water and labour shortage, high labour cost, and lack of sugar mills in the district as reasons for the status quo. As per the data available with the agriculture department, sugarcane was cultivated on 792 hectares in the district in 2016. Following the drought that year, farmers had cultivated the crop only on 401 hectares in 2017. While the area under sugarcane cultivation saw ups and downs in the subsequent years, the same stood at 400 hectares last December.

R-Day celebrated in subdued manner in Coimbatore, Tirupur | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: The 72nd Republic day was celebrated in a subdued manner at VOC Park in the city on Tuesday. Collector K Rajamani hoisted the tricolour flag and accepted the guard of honour from armed forces, home guards, fire and rescue personnel and National Cadet Corps (NCC). All the cultural events were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The collector distributed the Chief Minister’s police medal to 124 personnel both from the city and rural police department. He also honored 92 government officials for their outstanding work and four government bus drivers for operating buses without any accidents for the past 25 years, a statement from the collector’s office said.
