COVID-19| Coimbatore continues to see a surge, logs 332 new cases

According to the Health Department, a 36-year-old woman with morbid obesity died of COVID-19 at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Monday. She was admitted to the hospital on Sunday. With this, the number of deaths due to COVID-19 in Coimbatore district rose to 696. The overall tally in Tiruppur district crossed 20,000 with 141 fresh cases being reported on Wednesday. After crossing the 10,000-mark in October last year, the district has added 10,000 cases in six months.

Representatives of the medicos told The Hindu that they will continue to boycott all duties at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) until their demands are met. According to the representatives, the quarters for the PG students on the CMCH campus were being used as a quarantine facility for medicos who do duty in COVID-19 wards. Though the authorities had made arrangements for the accommodation medicos in other facilities such as hotels during the lockdown period, the practice is not maintained well now, they said. According to medicos, they are also forced to source their food as they stay away from the campus with limited facilities.

According to police sources, hundreds of people gathered at a DMK campaign meeting at Karumbukkadai at around 6 p.m. At that time, the vehicle of AIADMK’s Thondamuthur candidate S.P. Velumani crossed the location, during which a section of the DMK cadre allegedly shouted slogans against the AIADMK. This resulted in a physical altercation that left a few of the cadres from both parties injured and they were rushed to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for treatment.

According to the letter submitted by the PG students to Dean A. Nirmala and all heads of departments at CMCH, medical interns who were on Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI) were recently relieved, forcing the PG doctors deputed for COVID-19 duty to perform additional activities such as administration of drugs to patients. The letter requested hiring of more staff nurses to reduce the workload of PG doctors.
