A suspected ganja peddler, who was abducted from Rathinapuri by a gang impersonating as police officers, died on Thursday owing to injuries.
The police said that on January 25, R. Manikandan (23) was forcibly taken away from his house at Mettupalayam by a gang of four men who claimed to be from Thudiyalur police station.
Two days later, he was found admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital with severe injuries, including on the head and in the abdomen. He declined to lodge a complaint with the Mettupalayam police, who inquired him. As his condition worsened, he was admitted to a private hospital, where he died on Thursday.

TIRUPUR: At least 62 persons, including bull tamers and owners, were injured during Alagumalai jallikattu held in the district on Sunday. The annual event saw the participation of 749 bulls and 555 tamers from across the state. Around 15,000 spectators were in attendance.
According to official sources, 23 tamers, 32 bull owners, and nine spectators were injured. “At least 18 persons suffered major injuries such as fractures and lacerations, while the rest had minor injuries.”

COIMBATORE: Private hospitals in the district will be able to collect Covid-19 vaccine vials from the storage unit here on Sunday and begin administration on Monday.
This comes after health minister Dr C Vijayabaskar announced on Friday that private hospitals with more than 150 health workers could administer the vaccine vials on their premises itself.
Around 5pm on Saturday, the public health and medical services department got a written communication, asking it start handing over Covishield vials to the private hospitals with more than 150 health workers.
Dr G Ramesh Kumar, deputy director of public health, said, “We have around 15 to 20 hospitals in that category in the district. We will be able to hand over the vaccines on Sunday afternoon based on the number of health workers they have registered.”
