HORACE The fast-growing town of Horace is continuing to work on special assessment changes after a tumultuous year during which residents took issue with rising taxes and recalled two City Council members.
After a special Horace City Council meeting about special assessment issues Wednesday night, July 28, Mayor Kory Peterson said the biggest complaint last year was that town property owners each received a special assessment averaging about $460 to pay for the new roundabout on 76th Avenue next to the new middle school and a high school that is under construction.

A wildfire threatening a ski resort isn’t entirely unfamiliar in Colorado. The 416 Fire, one of the largest in the state’s history, nearly took out Purgatory Ski Area outside Durango in 2018. Two years later, another wildfire claimed about 6 acres at the same mountain resort.
Such a massive blaze isn’t easy to recall having happened at Steamboat Resort, according to Corey Peterson, director of slope maintenance, at least not since he’s been with the resort.

After a season filled with uncertainty and change because of the pandemic, three professionals from Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. were honored last week with Double Diamond Awards, a celebration of excellence in Colorado’s ski industry.
Among this year’s 10 winners were Christina Bruno, Scott Alder and Duncan Draper, each of Ski Corp.
“The Double Diamond Awards recognize the standout performers and in this pandemic impacted season, this year’s winners deserve extra recognition for their commitment, dedication and professionalism,” said Melanie Mills, president and CEO of Colorado Ski Country USA, which hosts the annual awards. “The industry’s front-line employees made this season possible, working tirelessly to keep guests safe and informed and our mountains open for the season. Congratulations to our winners and thanks to our industry’s exemplary employees.”
