Class of 2024 struggles to find community going into sophomore year

News By Abby Kennedy May 10, 2021 12:23 AM With her entire freshman year completed, Lucia Shen has still never slept a night on campus.  Shen spent her freshman year living in an apartment 15 minutes off campus and said losing her freshman residence hall experience left her without a sense of community. Shen is one of more than half a dozen students who said they struggled to find community in an entirely virtual environment this academic year, turning to student organizations and social media to form relationships instead.

Formal IFC recruitment continues drop amid pandemic

News By Lauren Sforza Mar 1, 2021 12:06 AM The number of people participating in the Interfraternity Council’s first virtual formal recruitment period last month dropped by more than 50 percent compared to last year, officials said. Continuing a two-year decline, 83 fewer men participated in formal fraternity recruitment in 2021 compared to 2020, officials said. IFC leaders said the decrease in potential new members allowed existing members to focus on building stronger connections with participants through online formal recruitment events, like virtual pizza and poker nights.

News By Tiffany Garcia Jan 11, 2021 12:10 AM Updated: Jan. 11, 2021 at 10:51 a.m. First-year students enrolled in the Division for Student Affairs’ newest mentorship program said the program has provided them with emotional support as they navigated their first semester of GW. DSA launched Thrive GW, a mentorship program for first-year students to connect with staff, students and alumni while studying remotely last fall. Students involved in the program said their mentor has eased their transition to GW, and they could lean on them for tips on academics and mental health.
