DFA seeks help for stranded Filipino seafarers in Fiji

DFA seeks help for stranded Filipino seafarers in Fiji enablePagination: false endIndex: Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 12) – The Department of Foreign Affairs directed on Thursday the Philippine embassy in Wellington, New Zealand to look into the plight and assist stranded Filipino seafarers in Fiji. The DFA said the seafarers are currently assisted by the Fijian government and the International Transport Workers Federation. A news report published by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on Thursday revealed the situation of at least seven Filipino seafarers, who were abandoned by their employer Goundar Shipping after raising their working conditions to the management. Four of the seven Filipinos were fired on Christmas Day last year after refusing to surrender their passports to Goundar Shipping. The other three Filipino sailors said the company left them stranded at a remote wharf.

ITF says abandoned Filipino sailors treated like slaves in Fiji - Pacific Beat

Download 2.97 MB The International Transport Workers Federation says a Fijian shipping company s treatment of a group of Filipino sailors amounts to slavery. The three Filipino men had been working for Goundar Shipping for nearly two years on an inter-island ferry but say they were sacked recently after raising concerns about their working conditions. They say Goundar reneged on a promise to fly them back home when their contracts were completed and now they have been abandoned without money for food and accommodation. The Federation s inspector Sarah Maguire said not only has Goundar refused to send the men home it has also underpaid them.

Union urges B C Ferries to denounce Fijian shipping company

In an interview, B.C. Ferry and Marine Workers’ Union president Graeme Johnston said they have taken up the cause of Goundar’s workers because three of the shipping company’s vessels Queen of Prince Rupert, Queen of Chilliwack, and Queen of Nanaimo were purchased from B.C. Ferries and Goundar was at one time a manager at B.C. Ferries. “We share solidarity with other seafarers around the world and when we see B.C. Ferries vessels being used in a way that is akin to human trafficking it’s going to be something that causes a lot of hard feelings among our members and stir up a lot of passions,” he said.

Feb 25, 2021 04:37:53 PM The government has not received any formal request for assistance from the three Filipino sailors stuck in Fiji. The three men were working onboard the inter-island vessel; the Lomaiviti Princess until two weeks ago when they were told to leave the ship. The men have no way of returning home unless Goundar Shipping Limited, their employer pays for their return. The International Transport Workers Federation has been pushing for Goundar Shipping to pay for their return home but so far has been unsuccessful. The three men are now asking the government to intervene to help the sailors get on the next flight home on March 4.
