Abandoned Filipino seafarers relieved to be leaving Fiji

SUVA (ABC/Pacnews) â A group of Filipino sailors who claim they were left stranded by their employer in Fiji for several months are ecstatic they ll soon be heading home. The seven men say they were abandoned by their Fijian employer, Goundar Shipping, after raising concerns about their pay and working conditions. The Philippine government has stepped in to pay for their return flights after Goundar refused to send them back. âI m very happy because my family are very excited to see me safe and sound, said Joshua Imperial, who worked as a cook on Gondarâs ferries. Some of them have been out of work since January without the means to return home and they ve been relying on the kindness of strangers and the International Transport Workers Federation to survive.

Permanent Secretary for Health Dr. James Fong said passengers can travel to Viti Levu, but no one in Viti Levu can leave until lockdown measures have expired. “From midday tomorrow, we are suspending outbound inter-island passenger travel from Viti Levu,” he said. “Passengers can travel to Viti Levu, but no one on Viti Levu can leave until these measures have expired. “We know that isn’t convenient for everyone, but the scenario of containing this virus throughout our maritime regions all at once should be avoided at all costs,” he said.

The International Transport Workers Federation, ITF, said Goundar Shipping had registered the ferry Lomaiviti Princess 3 as being shorter and lighter than it actually is. This ferry somehow, on its transit from Canada to Fiji, lost 14 metres, said ITF inspector Sarah Maguire. The ABC has seen a copy of the ferry s survey certificate, issued by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji in January last year, that puts the vessel s length at 100 metres.

Lawyer Adrianne Ali in an exclusive interview with FijiLive said it is interesting to see the company now advertising for positions of hiring ticketing officers, masters class, marine engineers, deck watch keepers, engine watch ratings, ordinary seaman, deck cadets and few others. Ali said this issue should have been of concern to government as Goundar Shipping owner was going overseas to hire people for jobs which capable Fijians could have easily performed.
