Florida needs better tools to defend residents against a variety of scams

Floridians are getting smarter about the most common tricks used by scammers. Cell-phone owners are now familiar with the concept of “spoofing,” where caller ID information is hacked to make it appear that a call is coming from a local source or a trusted business. And many are inured to the relentless phone calls from people pretending to sell car warranties, remotely fix computers that aren’t broken and “resolve” problems with Social Security. Online, many have learned to mistrust ads that promise sought-after goods for unbelievably low prices, or be wary of friend requests on social media that ape the profiles of real people.

Investigation into the Surfside condo building collapse won t begin while the site remains a crime scene, expert says

The Surfside community in Florida is anxious to learn what caused the condo building collapse that has killed at least 97 people, but a structural engineer said the investigation will not reach full force until search crews have finished their work. The site is currently under the control of the Miami-Dade Police Department and is classified as a crime scene following the collapse on June 24, Allyn Kilsheimer, a structural engineer hired by the city, told CNN. As of Sunday, 95 of the 97 victims recovered have been identified. Miami-Dade County said last week that, moving forward, it will only be reporting the number of victims who have been identified, out of respect for the families who are still waiting and to ensure we are reporting the most accurate possible numbers.
