KPRC 2 and Texas Mattress Makers are surprising 20 deserving high school seniors with scholarships. All students selected for scholarships have been nominated by their high schools.
This academic year was particularly challenging because of the pandemic, but these students still rose above and beyond in school.
The 12th $2,500 Senior Scholarship was awarded to Jacob Quintanilla from Galena Park High School in the Galena Park Independent School District. He has been attending classes virtually, and has been able to maintain a 4.3 GPA. He is ranked 10th in his class.

How Houston-area school districts are responding after Gov. Abbott lifts mask order

HOUSTON – Several Houston-area school districts are responding after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced the lifting of business capacity limits and the state’s mask mandate.
Under the executive order, which went into effect March 10, Abbott added that public schools may operate under the standard health protocols issued by the Texas Education Agency. Private schools and colleges are expected to follow the same standard.
Houston-area school districts have issued statements on how they plan to move forward.

Alief ISD - Closed Tuesday, Feb. 23 for staff development day.
Aldine ISD - Closed Monday, Feb. 22 and Tuesday Feb. 23. Wednesday, Feb. 24 through Friday, Feb. 26 for remote learning days.
Angleton ISD - Open for Tuesday, Feb. 23.
Clear Creek ISD - Clear Creek ISD will be open on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
Channelview ISD - Only staff for work day Tuesday, Feb. 23
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD - Open on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
Dickinson ISD - Open on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
Fallbrook Academy - Fallbrook Academy will be closed on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
Fort Bend ISD - Closed to students Tuesday, Feb. 23. Staff expected to attend.

Galena Park ISD employees surprised with $1,000 stipend during pandemic

GALENA PARK, Texas – The emotional strain from the coronavirus pandemic on educators has been overwhelming. Instead of telling the faculty and staff in Galena Park Independent School District what a great job they’ve done, the school board of trustees and superintendent decided to show them.
As a token of their appreciation for their dedication and commitment during the pandemic, trustees approved the administration’s recommendation at Monday’s board meeting.
“There was just applause and joy and laughter. It was astonishing. We were so surprised and grateful. This will go a significant way into paying for student loans for our family and making sure my husband and I will be able to start a family soon,” said Cynthia Tenaglio, a chemistry teacher at Galena Park High School.
