How to stay safe this Memorial Day amid extreme drought in Utah © Provided by KUTV Salt Lake City It s no secret, Utahns love to spend time outside, but the current extreme drought conditions throughout the state mean those heading out for Memorial Day weekend should plan for low water levels and fire danger.  Boating safely  If you re spending Memorial Day weekend at the lake, plan for low water levels and crowds.  Wherever you re headed, you may not be able to just roll up to a boat launch and head out. State officials advised checking ahead to find out which launches are open. To relieve some of the expected congestion, officials suggested readying their boats at a nearby parking lot before driving up to launch ramps.

National Park Service Lees Ferry on the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam is a world-famous rainbow trout fishery. But in recent years a different nonnative fish, the brown trout, has started to grow in numbers. The brown trout is a predatory fish that gobbles up not only the rainbows but also endangered native species in the Grand Canyon. Now, state and federal wildlife agencies have come up with a plan to reduce their numbers. They’re paying people to go fishing. Starting today, anglers can earn 25 dollars a head for catching and harvesting brown trout. KNAU’s Melissa Sevigny spoke with Ken Hyde, chief of science at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, about the new incentive program.

Zion National Park campfire ban among latest batch of Utah fire restrictions

ST. GEORGE With fire conditions remaining extremely dangerous, especially in southern Utah and northern Arizona, a group of agencies announced larger fire restrictions across the region set to begin Wednesday ahead of the Memorial Day weekend crowds. Color Country Interagency Fire Management officials on Monday announced a wide range of new fire restrictions for nearly all unincorporated county, state and federally administered public lands across Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Kane and Washington counties. The order states: No campfires or other open fires are allowed outside of agency improved and maintained campgrounds or homesites in southwest Utah. Cabins or homesites on unincorporated private land within the five counties are required to have running water for fires. Devices fueled by liquid petroleum are not included in the ban.
