ROANOKE RAPIDS â As the holidays roll in, law enforcement is doubling down on safety with an expected increase in roadway users this year.
Even with the State Highway Patrol anticipating higher volumes of travelers during the holiday, Sgt. Angel Genao of the SHP in Roanoke Rapids said law enforcement also expects an increase in substance abuse, such as alcohol consumption. Genao said 80% of his workforce will work on Christmas and will do the same on New Yearâs Eve to maximize efforts to ensure public safety.
âObviously, we canât catch everyone, but weâre going to make our effort to try and catch as many people as we can,â he said. âBut the public needs to help us and abide by these laws so that it will make our job a little easier and make the roads safer.â

SHP Working to Keep Drivers Safe During the Holidays
With the holiday season in full swing, the State Highway Patrol will be looking to curb the unexpected increase in fatal collisions experienced in 2020. The anticipated increase in vehicle traffic over the coming weeks will require all across North Carolina to practice safe driving habits on our state’s roadways.
Prior to deciding whether or not to travel, the SHP strongly encourages the public to visit the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) website to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Best practices during the holiday season and information on our state’s current response to the coronavirus can be found on the DHHS website here: https://covid19.ncdhhs.gov/
