Highway patrol urges holiday travel safety

ROANOKE RAPIDS — As the holidays roll in, law enforcement is doubling down on safety with an expected increase in roadway users this year. Even with the State Highway Patrol anticipating higher volumes of travelers during the holiday, Sgt. Angel Genao of the SHP in Roanoke Rapids said law enforcement also expects an increase in substance abuse, such as alcohol consumption. Genao said 80% of his workforce will work on Christmas and will do the same on New Year’s Eve to maximize efforts to ensure public safety. “Obviously, we can’t catch everyone, but we’re going to make our effort to try and catch as many people as we can,” he said. “But the public needs to help us and abide by these laws so that it will make our job a little easier and make the roads safer.”
