Residents ask Howick crusader and team to repair more potholes after still waiting for municipality

DURBAN - WHAT started as a crusade to fix a bumpy and pothole-riddled road in the neighbourhood is increasingly becoming a way of earning a living for Howick resident Jonty Myhillâs assistants, as calls for their services have soared in recent days.
Last week, The Mercury reported how Myhill had started fixing Curryâs Post Road â which he calls a death trap â three years ago, fearing that waiting for the uMngeni Municipality to fix it could lead to further delays and possible loss of lives. Since then, Myhill has conducted repairs every year and hired locals on a temporary basis to help him.
KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC wants the appointments of two municipal managers set aside.
The High Court in Pietermaritzburg previously ruled in favour of the MEC, setting aside the appointments.
But the Supreme Court of Appeals overturned the decision, stating that the delay in launching the application for review was unreasonable.
The appointments of two KwaZulu-Natal municipal managers (MM) should be declared null and void and should be set aside.
KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Sipho Hlomuka wants Mthonjaneni municipal manager Philani Sibiya and Nkandla s MM, Langelihle Jili, booted from their posts.
On Tuesday, the Constitutional Court heard that the two municipal managers did not comply with the required qualifications.
Faulty Electricity Billing Latest: 86% say complaints not handled
KwaZulu-Natal residents have complained about a high rate of incorrect electricity bills and unread meters in a recent survey.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has written to KwaZulu-Natal Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, calling on him to conduct an investigation into the allegedly incorrect and unfair electricity and water billing in the province.
DA MPL and spokesperson on CoGTA, Chris Pappas, said a survey of more 770 residents across the province had identified billing as a key challenge, as most municipalities were allegedly failing to provide adequate and fair billing services.

DURBAN - Members of the public are being urged to come forward with any information that may assist in ensuring the safe return of a kidnapped traditional leader in KwaZulu-Natal.
Ibambabukhosi Ngcobo leads the Ginisela Manyuswa traditional council in a local municipality in the Ugu district.

Heavy rains expected in northern KZN

DURBAN - The KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs department has placed directed disaster management teams across the province on high alert as heavy rains are expected this weekend in the northern parts of the province.
According to the warning released by the South African Weather Service (SAWS), the northern parts of the province are to experience heavy rains, starting from today.
SAWS forecaster Eric Randall said that according to the forecast, disruptive rainfall which could lead to localised flooding was expected.
Uthukela district areas including Ladysmith and Winterton, experienced heavy rains this week which resulted in several areas being flooded.
