For years I’ve been waiting for Microsoft to finally ditch the drive and allow us Xbox gamers the chance to embrace a fully digital life. In fact, when the original Xbox One, then Xbox One S, and then Xbox One X released, I was ready to make the jump with each iteration. I haven’t bought a physical copy of a game in years, and with one less thing to go wrong, removing the drive seemed like a sensible idea. However, the only hint that they were ready to make the move was with the launch of the
Xbox One S All-Digital Edition in 2019, and by that time it just felt like one console variation too many. I mean, why ditch the more powerful Xbox One X just to have an aesthetically pleasing front face?

Choosing the best Xbox console in 2021 comes down to personal preference and what you look for in a device. The largest factor to consider is functionality balancing whether the performance meets your expectations with compatibility for the games you play. The Xbox Series X might be Microsoft s best console by the spec sheet, but several alternatives are available, each delivering rich functionality and hefty savings.
The Xbox Series S is a prime example, launching alongside Xbox Series X as a budget-friendly, next-generation games console. The device aims to deliver the flagship Xbox hallmarks, built to run the latest cutting-edge games far beyond the lifespan of Xbox One. That means almost identical features, chiefly scaling back visual quality and axing the optical disc drive. That low-cost entry may prove alluring for casual gaming, especially when coupled with an Xbox Game Pass membership.
Xbox One S vs PS4: Price
Before you read any further, it s worth noting that the PS4 and Xbox One S are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Microsoft has officially discontinued the Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, which means retailers won t have much stock left to sell; it also means that what stock is available is a little more expensive than normal.
Ordinarily, the Xbox One S and PS4 sit at £250 and £260 respectively, and it is still very much possible to find both for those prices (as an individual unit or a bundle) if you hunt around. These consoles are available in both 500GB and 1TB variants, with the 1TB PS4 usually costing around £50 more – although again, with stock slowly decreasing you re likely to find all manner of inconsistencies.
