Heathfield High community demands charges against principal be dropped

Heathfield High community demands charges against principal be dropped Share Cape Town - Activists, parents and learners have once again come out to voice their support for Heathfield High School principal Wesley Neumann, who faces dismissal for defying an edict from the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). The disciplinary charges against Neumann stem from his opposition to his school being reopened during the last year’s first Covid-19 lockdown. On Tuesday, his supporters protested outside the WCED’s offices, demanding its new head of department (HOD), Brent Walters, drop all charges. Neumann is facing six charges following his refusal to reopen the school amid the Covid-19 infection peak last year.

UN agency roped in to break public sector wage deadlock as nationwide strike looms

Unions want an inflation-related increase plus 4%. (Getty) As government and public sector unions remain deadlocked over wage negotiations, additional help has been roped in to facilitate talks and avert a potential strike by civil servants.  Facilitation proceedings started on Sunday and, Fin24 understands, by Monday the internal processes of facilitation were still being sorted out.  Mugwena Maluleke of the SA Democratic Teachers Union told Fin24 on Monday afternoon that the negotiation process was now being assisted by an independent facilitator and, over and above that, the International Labour Organisation is also involved in the facilitation.  The ILO is the oldest specialised agency of the United Nations.

Unions? wage push hit by disunity

Unions? wage push hit by disunity News24 Threats of a massive public sector strike next month are being undermined by disunity in the public sector trade unions. The Public Servants Association of SA (PSA), trade unions affiliated to Cosatu and the Federation of Unions of SA (Fusa) declared a deadlock last week. This was after government negotiators doubled down on National Treasury s stance that there was no money to foot the bill for the proposed salary increases linked to inflation plus 4%. Instead, government s revised offer came in the form of a proposal that the funds currently allocated for pay progression, resettlement costs for workers from one province to the other and daily allowances no longer be paid out.
