Irvine, Calif., Dec. 17, 2020 Reflectins, the unique structural proteins that give squids and octopuses the ability to change colors and blend in with their surroundings, are thought to have great potential for innovations in areas as diverse as electronics, optics and medicine. Scientists and inventors have been stymied in their attempts to fully utilize the powers of these biomolecules due to their atypical chemical composition and high sensitivity to subtle environmental changes.
In a study published recently in the
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, University of California, Irvine researchers have revealed the structure of a reflectin variant at the molecular level, and they have demonstrated a method for mechanically controlling the hierarchical assembly and optical properties of the protein. These findings are seen as key steps in exploiting many of the potentially useful attributes of the reflectin family.

Irvine, Calif., Dec. 17, 2020 University of California, Irvine health sciences researchers have created a machine-learning model to predict the probability that a COVID-19 patient will need a ventilator or ICU care. The tool is free and available online for any healthcare organization to use. The goal is to give an earlier alert to clinicians to identify patients who may be vulnerable at the onset, said Daniel S. Chow, an assistant professor in residence in radiological sciences and first author of the study, published in
PLOS ONE. The tool predicts whether a patient s condition will worsen within 72 hours.
Coupled with decision-making specific to the healthcare setting in which the tool is used, the model uses a patient s medical history to determine who can be sent home and who will need critical care. The study found that at UCI Health, the tool s predictions were accurate about 95 percent of the time.
US secretary of state incites xenophobic hysteria against Chinese students, denounces “anti-American” universities
On December 9, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, speaking at Georgia Institute of Technology, denounced “left-leaning” colleges for allowing Chinese espionage on their campuses and called on universities to limit the number of Chinese students they accept. The remarks signal the intention of the Trump administration to escalate its anti-China drive while at the same time cracking down on academic freedom at home.
In his opening remarks, Pompeo invokes the racist trope of the “Yellow Peril,” claiming that China seeks to dominate the world and spread its insidious influence through the universities, saying: “Americans must know how the Chinese Communist Party is poisoning the well of our higher education institutions for its own ends, and how these actions degrade our freedom and American national security.” He went on, “The Chinese Communist Party kno
