The former site of a mobile home park is now the future home of Nanticoke Crossing Park, both a conservation effort and one of few opportunities for public recreation along the Nanticoke River.
The 64-mile river once explored by Captain John Smith remains a sleeping giant. While eastern Sussex County is known for its variety of outdoor activities and sprawling state parks, to the west, the Nanticoke is a virtually untapped eco-tourism asset.
The river is the most pristine tributary of the Chesapeake Bay and features the highest rate of biodiversity in the watershed, according to Chesapeake Conservancy President and CEO Joel Dunn.

On a January afternoon, I wavered at the thought of visiting Mill Pond Garden, an outdoor garden recommended by a friend. But when I toured the property of the homeowner and creator Michael Zajic, my mind simply marveled at the beauteous landscape of shrubs and trees, and yes, flowering plants, around me.
“Nature is our greatest teacher and greatest joy. Public gardens are like plant and happiness schools; we need them now more than ever,” explained Zajic, who has devoted his entire career to designing gardens to share with the public.

Red Wagon LLC, a charitable organization managed by Dogfish Head owners Sam and Mariah Calagione, recently donated $30,000 to the Sussex County Land Trust. Land trust board of directors Chair Casey Kenton said the funds will be used to support efforts to build a trailhead for the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail at the trust’s Stephen P. Hudson Park at the intersection of Route 9 and Coolspring Road. The trust has also formed an exploratory committee to research a pedestrian bridge over Route 9 as part of the trail.
