In Kurigram district of Bangladesh, a women-headed, community-based organisation is training rural women and extending support to deal with Covid-19 and monsoon floods. Md Fahad Hossain reports. This is the 35th story from the Voices from the Frontline series by ICCCAD and CDKN.
Kurigram, located in the northwest region, is the poorest district of Bangladesh. The northwest region has already started facing slow onset climate change (temperature rise, changes in precipitation, drought) as well as sudden climatic shocks (floods, erratic rainfall). Such climatic events put huge pressure on the livelihood of the inhabitants of this region.
Jute ministry forms committee over reopening of BJMC’s closed mills

The Ministry of Textiles and Jute formed a nine-member inter-ministerial working committee to examine and consider the proposal received for re-introducing BJMC s closed mills under private management on lease basis.
The ministry issued an order in this regard yesterday, said a press release.
The additional secretary (administration) of the ministry has been made convener of the committee.
Other members of the committee are representatives of the Prime Minister s Office, additional secretary (Jute) of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, representatives of Finance Department, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Commerce, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority and Executive Director of Jute Diversification Promotion Centre (JDPC).
Jute is back in golden glory again: Dastagir

Dhaka, Dec 15, 2020 [BSS)- Textile and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi said that Bengal’s jute has returned to its golden glory.
The minister was speaking at a fair and exhibition of multipurpose jute products at the Jute Diversification Promotion Center (JDPC) in the capital today noon, said a release here.
“The lost glory and tradition of jute has come back. New and versatile products made of jute is constantly being discovered,” the minister said.
“Jute products are no more old and traditional…The old products have now moved to new heights with various new products,” he added.
